Meet Penny Simkin

It is a unique opportunity to hear Penny. Penny Simkin is one of the founders of the doula movement in the USA and she will be in London on Tuesday 19 June 2007 to talk about:

- childhood sexual abuse and how it impacts on birth
- pain versus suffering in labour, hands-on comfort measures for labour
- discussion on the differences and similarities between UK and North American doulas.

Penny Simkin, PT, is a physical therapist who has specialized in childbirth education since 1968. She estimates she has prepared over 9,500 women, couples, and siblings for childbirth. She has assisted hundreds of women or couples through childbirth as a doula. She is the author of many books on birth for both parents and professionals. Through independent study and her work as a birth counselor, she has developed a counseling approach for pregnant survivors of sexual abuse. This work is described in the book When Survivors Give Birth, which she co-authored with Phyllis Klaus.

Time
Tuesday 19th June from 10AM to 5PM. Teas and coffees will be provided but lunch is not included. You can bring your own lunch or there are several cafes within very close proximity.

Cost and how to book
The cost for this event is £50. Places are limited.
All proceeds will be donated to the Birth Companions Charity. Birth Companions is a small charity providing practical and emotional support to women who face giving birth whilst in detention. You can fin out more about the Birth Companion Charity here.

It also includes discussions of the possible emotional reactions of the partner during challenging aspects of childbirth (304 pages). £10

The Labor Progress Handbook (2nd Edition)
This quick reference book, now in its 2nd edtion, offers maternity professionals strategies to maintain normal labor progress and lower caesarean rates. The eight chapters explore possible etiologies of labor dystocia at each pahse of labor. Practical techniques are suggested to prevent dystocia, along with discussions of available scientific evidence of effectiveness and safety.
